4.50.240 Sales Tax Exemption For Residents Sixty-Five(65) Years of Age
Any person sixty-five (65) years of age or older who is a permanent Borough resident and qualifies for the State of Alaska permanent fund dividend, can apply for a sales tax exemption card. Senior citizens are exempt from sales taxes in the Ketchikan Gateway Borough and the City of Ketchikan for purchases of items for use by themselves and their spouses. Applications (PDF) can be filled out in advance, but the card can only be issued in person at the Borough offices:

Any person 65 years of age or older who is a resident of the State of Alaska and has been a bona fide resident of the Borough for not less than 180 consecutive days is considered eligible for a sales tax exemption card.
Effective October 1, 2010 an applicant must be eligible for the State of Alaska Permanent Fund dividend under AS 43.23.005 for that same year or for the immediately preceding year.
Senior Citizens 65 years of age or older and Disabled Veterans with a 50% or more disability may qualify for a property tax exemption up to $150,000 of assessed value. Non-profit exemptions on property used exclusively for religious, charitable, cemetery, hospital, educational, or community purpose as defined by State Statute and Borough Code.
