On April 9, beginning at 0200, a fire occurred at the South Tongass Fire Station. The fire was under control by 0349 and out by 0430. In addition to the South Tongass Fire and EMS responders, assistance was provided by the City of Ketchikan and North Tongass fire departments.
There has been no interruption of fire and EMS services to the South Tongass and Saxman areas. Services continue to be provided by South Tongass and North Tongass Fire and EMS staff, who are now based at the Saxman Fire Station.
Three South Tongass Fire and EMS response vehicles were affected by the fire and are currently out of service. Assistance with apparatus and staff continue to be available from the North Tongass and City of Ketchikan departments.
