[ARCHIVED] Update 2 to Fire at South Tongass Fire Station

The quick response to this event was possible due to the mutual aid agreements in place with the City of Ketchikan Fire Department and the North Tongass Fire Department.

Status of Staff:  There were no injuries to individuals. All South Tongass Fire and EMS staff and volunteers remain available for duty.  

Origin of Fire:  The fire started at the north end of the building by a piece of equipment. The State Fire Marshall will be on the scene April 10th to confirm the source of the ignition.  

Building Damage:  The north vehicle bay has serious damage to doors, walls, and structural beams. There is smoke damage throughout the station, including the second floor and the south end offices. The extent of the damage is still being determined and there is currently no estimate of the value of loss.  

Equipment Damage:  All vehicles and equipment are insured. To follow is a preliminary estimation of the damage to be verified by the insurance adjuster:

  1. 20-year-old engine: total loss.
  2. 20-year-old ambulance: total loss.
  3. Surplus support vehicle (received from City of Ketchikan): total loss.
  4. 7-year-old engine: smoke damage; may be able to be rehabilitated; under review by insurance representative. 
  5. 10-year-old ambulance:  serious smoke damage; may be able to be rehabilitated; under review by insurance representative.  

There is no indication of damage to adjacent properties or structures.  

Mitigation and Operations Plan: 

  • There continue to be full fire and EMS services available to the South Tongass Service Area and City of Saxman. 
  • The South Tongass fire engine stationed at the City of Saxman is operable.
  • The City of Ketchikan has loaned the use of an ambulance for South Tongass.
  • The City and Borough of Wrangell is sending an ambulance by barge on loan to South Tongass. 
  • The City of Ketchikan is on standby with fire engines and mutual aid response. 
  • South Tongass responders are stationed at Ketchikan Fire Station One.
  • Temporary offices for South Tongass staff will be set up at the White Cliff Building. 
  • The State Troopers have been notified. 
  • Fencing is being installed around the perimeter of the building. 
  • Storage is being provided by Borough Public Works.
